Second car conundrum
Shane is a mother of two and was able to ditch the family’s second car
The background…
I’m a mother of two small children. A year ago, we were on the cusp of replacing our second car under the government scrappage scheme.
However, on the eve of purchase I went online to find out a bit about car clubs. Our road had just been repaved and there was a spot for a City Car Club just outside my doorstep so I was curious…
My husband works in sales and is usually the work-at-home once a week type. The other four days are a mix of driving to different locations in Surrey or taking the train into London. As for me, I’m a stay-at-home mum so I take the bus and train two or three times a month to go shopping or to visit friends.
The second car dilemma…
Our second car was a legacy from before motherhood and was used when I commuted to work. However, it was driven only about 2 times a week for various outings such as a mum’s group or to the supermarket for a ‘big shop’. I did drive a bit more when it rained but most of the time it just sat there doing nothing.
The City Car Club solution…
We looked into City Car Club and it was a no-brainer. Financially and environmentally it was the right thing to do. We decided to forego a second car and trial the City Car Club. I opted to cycle, walk, train, and take the bus a tiny bit more.
One year later I would say it has been a fantastic decision.
