What it costs

The costs of running your own car can sometimes slip through the household budget– the odd £190 for road tax here, the odd £400 for insurance there – but it all adds up.

Road tax ranges from £30 to £190 per year with the average being £129.28. Insurance will set you back £259 for a Toyota Yaris in Penzance through to £1802 for a Porsche Cayenne in London, with the average being £411.77

You’re looking at £148 to maintain a Citroen C2 and £661 for a BMW 7 series, with the average bill coming in at £299.71.

Depreciation can put a hole in your pocket to the tune of £1,173 for the baby Citroen to a toe-curling £12,089 on a Porsche Cayenne.

Residents’ parking permits vary widely, can be a hassle to obtain and are pretty much guaranteed to rise in cost in the future.

We think you’ve probably got the picture so we’re not even going to mention the cost of finance, MOT, breakdown cover and petrol!

Tell us what you spend on your car and we’ll show you how it compares to City Car Club membership.
