What's driving us

Home > What's driving us >

A millennium baby, we launched in 2000 to give people the freedom of a car when they need one, without the hassle and overheads of a car when they don't.

And we’re now the most experienced commercial car club in the UK.

We want to make entry into a car club as accessible as possible. We’re not lentil knitting hippies but we do want to reduce car use, congestion and emissions on our streets and we believe car clubs are the way forward.

Hybrid carsWe keep our fleet as new as possible. This has two benefits: firstly it ensures lower carbon emissions but also ensures our cars make you feel good. With the best will in the world a 13 year old Lada just isn’t going to cut it if you’re taking someone new out on a date.

As alternative-fuel cars become more commonplace, more economical and easier to use, we will be there, providing them for our members. We’ve already got nearly 50 hybrid cars in our fleet already.

We’re passionate about reducing traffic and reducing mileage. We know that a successful car sharing scheme can reduce car commuter traffic by nearly a quarter (Source: Making Car Sharing and Car Club Work guide – DfT 2004) and car club members reduce their miles driven by nearly half (Source: Moses 2005).

We want people to use alternatives to cars. Former owners increase their use of other transport modes by 40% after joining a car club and decrease their car use by 15% (Source: Ledbury 2004). Which is good news all round.

We want to cut down car purchase and car use. Independent research by the Environmental Change Institute shows that on joining a car club like City Car Club – 63.5% of members give up or do not purchase a private vehicle.

Right, that’s enough of the statistics. We’re passionate about City Car Club, try us out and see for yourself how it all works.
