Positive Help is a charitable organisation providing a range of practical, supportive services to enable people living with HIV or Hepatitis C in the Edinburgh to live at home. Their 75-strong team of volunteers help with domestic tasks, provide a children’s befriending service, a ‘study buddy’ service and supportive-transport service.

The transport service is charity’s busiest service, making over 3,500 journeys to hospital and social work appointments every year. Initially the charity was reliant on volunteers delivering this service using their own cars. Unfortunately this meant that its availability was significantly reduced as very few volunteers had access to a car.

In order to carter for the growing demand of the charity’s support network, Positive Help decided to explore alternative arrangements. Matthew Gilbert-Straw explains:

“We looked in to a number of options including leasing cars, but quickly found that these would be expensive and present a logistical challenge for volunteers. Luckily we came across City Car Club’s innovative scheme and after a little research we were delighted to find that it was ideal for our requirements.”

By taking advantage of City Car Club’s business membership, Positive Help were able to benefit from access to more than 130 modern, pay-as-you-drive vehicles across Edinburgh. The charity’s volunteers had the flexibility to reserve and use vehicles at short notice, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This meant that Positive Help could leverage the immediate availability of the vehicles and confidently deliver services to suit its client’s needs.

PositiveHelp

Matthew added, “The locations of City Car Club’s vehicles are ideal as our volunteers come from all parts of the city. We use the cars every day to transport clients to hospital and social care service. Without City Car club we wouldn’t be able to provide such an effective service. Their cars help us keep our clients connected to treatment and care programmes, allowing them to have a better quality of life.”

There were also other advantages for Positive Help in using City Car Club vehicles such as avoiding expenses associated to insurance, tax, maintenance and parking.

“City Car Club has proved to be more cost-effective for us because their hourly rental model means we only pay for the time we use. We also don’t have to spend lots of time on admin work and the service they provide is excellent. Their member support team is always very helpful and willing to resolve any issues.”

Positive Help continue to revel in access to Edinburgh’s car sharing scheme and the benefits it brings to the charity. Matthew said, “I would highly recommend City Car Club to anyone or any organisation looking for an alternative to using taxis, hire cars or lease vehicles.”

As the Managing Director of City Car Club, I have some exciting news to announce, and no, this isn’t an April Fools joke.

For a number of years, City Car Club has been busily expanding its operation across the UK to enable more people to benefit from low cost, convenient and greener motoring. We now operate in 17 cities across England, Scotland and Wales and the club now has around 30,000 members using the service.

We are very keen to grow the service much more by increasing the fleet size within our existing cities and also by expanding into new locations. We also want to keep strengthening our technology and general service offering to ensure the high levels of service that you are used to are maintained. It’s this passion to grow and constantly improve that has driven us (pardon the pun) to explore partnerships that could help us grow much faster than we could ourselves.

It is my pleasure to advise you that we have found a partner that shares our ethos and values and who yesterday acquired City Car Club – Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

With this integration, City Car Club and Enterprise will be firmly established as one of the UK’s leading transport providers and will allow for considerable growth in what we do. Enterprise Rent-A-Car is the UK’s leading car rental business. What you may not know is they are also the world’s largest vehicle rental company and one of the USA’s largest car sharing businesses with their own dedicated brand, Enterprise CarShare.

It will be very much business as usual in the short term, with the existing City Car Club team here as usual to help you along the way and you will see little or no change to what we are currently doing. I will be in touch again soon to let you know our plans for the future, which I am sure will benefit members considerably.

Thanks,

James Finlayson, Managing Director, City Car Club

Member spotlight: IBI Group http://www.citycarclub.co.uk/blog/2015/03/ibi-group http://www.citycarclub.co.uk/blog/2015/03/ibi-group#comments Tue, 03 Mar 2015 10:02:28 +0000 http://www.citycarclub.co.uk/?p=11605 Read More »]]> B8Cq_OhCMAEjbNf

As one of the world’s leading multidisciplinary design practices, IBI Group has designed hundreds of visionary projects around the world. Their eye-catching portfolio includes everything from high rise apartments and industrial buildings to train stations, schools and state-of-the-art hospitals. Today the firm has operations in five continents, with a strong presence in the UK, particularly the North West.

IBI Group’s Liverpool office has advised on a wide range of projects in the city region including a number of landmarks such as Liverpool Arena & Conference Centre, the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Kensington and Speke Health Centres and Hugh Baird College. The firm then places a lot of importance on business travel in order to maintain strong relationships with their clients.

Danny Marsh, Studio Associate at IBI Group Liverpool explains:

“IBI Group is committed to a more sustainable approach to travel for its staff. As a firm based in the heart of the city our staff can generally commute to work using excellent local public transport rather than rely on private car travel to the busy city centre where parking is expensive. However, as a consequence we had to rely heavily on taxis or less flexible forms of transport to get to meetings or site visits. We knew that we couldn’t continue down this path, particularly because of how quickly the business was growing.”

Rather than invest in a pool car scheme, IBI Group turned to City Car Club for a solution that would prove to be both flexible and cost-effective. With a business membership from City Car Club, IBI Group benefits from on-demand access to a number of modern vehicles spread across Liverpool, plus hundreds more in 16 other cities in the UK.

The use of the car club eliminated the firm’s reliance on local travel by taxi and also allowed the business to significantly reduce out-goings associated with travel. This was due to the fact that IBI Group only incurred a cost when actually using City Car Club vehicles and the price of membership included insurance, tax, fuel, parking, servicing and a whole host of expenses associated with running a fleet of vehicles.

“City Car Club has changed the way we approach this aspect of our local business travel. There are several cars in close proximity to the office which we can use as and when we need to, which is really great for short journeys in and around the city region. The convenience of the car club has allowed us to be much more flexible and professional, plus we have been able to streamline costs associated with business mileage.”

We’re reducing our mileage rates http://www.citycarclub.co.uk/blog/2015/02/were-reducing-our-mileage-rates http://www.citycarclub.co.uk/blog/2015/02/were-reducing-our-mileage-rates#comments Mon, 23 Feb 2015 14:10:14 +0000 http://www.citycarclub.co.uk/?p=11550 Read More »]]> MileageRate

We’ve been keeping a careful eye on the price of fuel over the last few months and thought it is only fair that our charges reflect their drop.

As of next month our mileage rates for cars and vans will be reduced by 4%. This means that from 1st March our mileage rates will be 22p per mile for cars (excluding our electric cars of course, which are just 5p per mile), and 28p per mile for vans.

Our mileage rates don’t just cover fuel but also servicing, tyres, maintenance, valeting and general wear and tear. We hope this reduction will allow a little more wiggle room in your travel budget, adding to the savings you already make when compared with owning a car.

If you would like more information about the changes to our mileage rates please email enquiries@citycarclub.co.uk or call 0113 394 3999.

Car Club 106 - chris bahn

Peter Wrighte has been a City Car Club member for 6 years. He operates a small IT business from his home in Central London which specialises in digital forensics for small businesses. Peter also runs www.backtotravel.com, a website which promotes money saving ideas and budget travel. Below Peter explains how he discovered City Car Club and why he’s not looking back to the days of car ownership.

In 2009 I moved to Central London with my wife having just started my business. This new venture meant I was based in London for two days a week with the remainder of my time spent visiting customers across the UK. At this point I was a die-hard car owner, having owned cars all of my adult life. After one month of living in London however, I began to question my motives.

My petrol bill for the first month of my new career was £800. On top of that my insurance company wanted more money due to my new postcode and the extra mileage I would be doing. I was also paying back the loan company £350 a month for the car anyway. Could it really be costing me more than £1200 per month just to get to work?! I hadn’t even thought about servicing, tyres, parking or depreciation. I needed to rethink the situation, urgently!

My wife and I sat down with the calculator and tried to run the numbers. Trains were not an option due to the remote location of some of my customers. A cheaper second-hand car would help save on the loan repayments sure, but would it be reliable? Also, could I be sure than an older car would return the same fuel economy as my relatively new one? Perhaps I might be worse off than before…

Then a friend told me about car clubs. After a quick search on Google, I concluded that City Car Club would be the only choice. Aside from being the best value and having great reviews, they had 2 cars on my street, dozens just a short walk away and hundreds more across the country which I could use to travel to my customers.

I put my car up for sale immediately and signed up. I was thrilled to find that I could start using the service almost immediately. My membership card arrived in the post within a couple of days and I was told I could also utilise my Oyster card to open their vehicles and start my reservations. All it took was a short phone call to the help desk.

When my first bill came via email I nearly fell of my chair. I’d saved roughly £600 in the first month by not using my own car. Also, I now had total piece of mind – no worries about insurance, tax, petrol, depreciation, servicing or parking fees. On top of that I was driving a brand new car every time.

The addition of Sat Nav in the vehicles also made finding my customers a breeze and my wife loved to be seen driving around in one of the swanky Fiat 500’s. I know she, like many people, would enjoy seeing them back on fleet.

I’ve used City Car Club at least twice per week ever since I joined 6 years ago. I’ve never had a breakdown or a query that wasn’t answered with a simple 30 second phone call.

City Car Club has been the perfect choice for my small business and for my personal transport – great value, clean, reliable, eco-friendly cars when you need them, where you need them. Perfect.
