James’s Blog: The art of tube strike newspaper reading

Whilst packed into an overcrowded tube-strike affected train yesterday, newspaper opened out with origami-style precision, I just about managed to read an article in the London Evening Standard that said private sales of new cars dipped a massive 38% in August, compared to the same period last year. Yes, the scrappage scheme was in full-steam back then, but only to prop up massively reduced sales. This is another clear sign that that people are continuing to try and save money where they can, and the popularity of car clubs has undoubtedly played a key role. Almost 140,000 people are now registered as a car club member in the UK, and this figure is doubling year on year.

Is this the demise of the privately owned car? Well no, not in the short term at least. Car ownership in city centres is, however, really being questioned these days though. Especially as there are more and more viable alternatives such as improved public transport, increased numbers of cycle lanes and far more car club cars available.

So while this news shouldn’t cause car manufacturers to get hot under the collar, the same certainly couldn’t be said for the temperature on the train. Think I’ll be taking a Boris Bike next time…

City Car Club: cheapest daily car rental in Edinburgh?

This week, an article in the Herald Scotland (24.08.10) did a snapshot comparison for renting a car for the day in Edinburgh. And guess what, City Car Club came out the cheapest!

“This week, a day’s hire for a small car at City Car Club would have cost £39.50, at National £47, and £57 at Avis”

So why not pick up one of the 100 City Cars located right across Edinburgh, and head off for a day trip somewhere?

More Toyota Prius added in London

Following our last location update announcing the location of the first phase of brand new Toyota Prius hybrids to arrive in our London fleet, a further 8 have now been added across the capital. This second phase of Prius are now available to book from the following locations:

BedZED, 24 Helios Road, SM6 7BZ

We are now working on adding them into our operations right across the UK. Further location updates to follow shortly…

We’ve now started to introduce the fantastic new Toyota Prius T3 hybrid to our growing fleet in London. As many of you will know, we already have a number of these cars in Bath, and local members have been telling us how very impressed they are with them – and so was I when I tried them out! With lots of room, amazing technology, plenty of power, automatic drive and a very quiet electric engine, these cars are definitely worth the little extra cost to rent. Oh, and let’s not forget that they are the greenest car around too!

We have an initial order of 70 which are now hitting the streets of London, and we’ll shortly be rolling them out to most other cities – keep an eye on the website for further updates. These will complement our smaller cars and I would certainly recommend that you give them a go. As always, we’re keen to know what you think, so do let us know once you’ve tried them.

Toyota Prius hybrids join the CCC fleet!

City Car Club is delighted to announce that it has begun to roll out a large number of brand new, latest generation Toyota Prius hybrid cars right across the UK fleet. These ultra-low emitting, hybrid cars will make up an increasing part of the fleet and are already available to book in London and Bath (with more cities to follow). Toyota Prius hybrid cars arrive in London!

As part of our commitment to an ultra-low emitting car club fleet, we have started to roll out a large number of brand new Toyota Prius hybrid cars. Our fleet in London received the first batch of these cars this week, and we will be adding more in London and right across the UK over the coming days and weeks. The car club will initially launch with cars located in the West End and by the end of the year will have 20 cars located across the city, including the City Centre and South Side.
